Tanaka et al.
About this reference
Tanaka and colleagues conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis of 351 published studies involving 18,712 subjects, combined with their own laboratory study of 514 healthy adults. The resulting formula (208 - 0.7 x age) challenged the long-standing '220 minus age' rule and has become one of the most widely cited equations for estimating maximum heart rate. The formula applies equally to men and women and across different fitness levels.
Known limitations
- Derived primarily from studies of healthy, active individuals
- Produces a single unisex estimate — does not account for potential sex differences
- Individual variation around the predicted value can be substantial (SD ~10 bpm)
