SHARE (5xSTS)
About this reference
The Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) is a large multi-country panel study of adults aged 50 and over. This analysis (Grgic et al. 2025) pooled the fifth wave of SHARE to establish reference values for the Five-Times Sit-to-Stand Test (FTSST), the time in seconds to rise from a chair and sit back down five times as fast as safely possible. Weighted percentiles (5th through 95th) were reported by 5-year age group and sex for 45,470 participants across 14 European countries. Lower times indicate better lower-limb strength and functional mobility.
Known limitations
- Covers adults aged 50 and over only; no data for younger adults
- We display P25 and P75 using the source's P20 and P80 values, because the study reports the 20th and 80th percentiles but not the 25th and 75th
- The 90+ age group has a smaller sample and shows minor non-monotonicity at the fastest and slowest tails; source values are reported verbatim without smoothing
- European sample; sit-to-stand performance can vary with population body weight and testing protocol
