About this reference
The CSEP-PATH (Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology — Physical Activity Training for Health) protocol is the most widely cited push-up norms dataset. It provides 5-category ratings (Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Needs Improvement) stratified by age decade and sex. Males perform standard push-ups from the toes; females perform modified push-ups from the knees. Both are tested continuously to failure with no time limit. The norms have been adopted by the ACSM and are republished in major fitness textbooks worldwide.
Known limitations
- Based on a Canadian sample — may not generalise to all populations
- Original data are 5-category ratings, not raw percentile distributions
- Female norms use modified (knee) push-ups, limiting direct comparison with male scores
- No data available for adults aged 70 and above
