About this reference
This study used smartphone-based photoplethysmography to collect resting heart rate measurements from a large sample of adult volunteers across the United States. Participants self-measured their resting heart rate using a smartphone app, providing one of the largest real-world datasets of resting heart rate norms stratified by age and sex. The study was part of the Health eHeart initiative, a digital cardiovascular health study.
Known limitations
- Self-selected, health-conscious participants may not represent the general population
- Smartphone-based measurement rather than clinical ECG
- Predominantly US-based sample
