Five-Times Sit-to-Stand: SHARE Reference Table
FitnessNorms uses Tables 2 and 3 from Grgic et al. 2025. The paper analyses SHARE wave 5 data collected in 2013 from 45,470 participants aged 50+ in 14 European countries. The authors applied SHARE person-level analysis weights and reported values separately by sex and 5-year age group.
- Source direction: the paper assigns higher performance percentiles to faster, smaller times. FitnessNorms stores values in ascending numeric order, so site P5, P50, and P95 use source performance P95, P50, and P5 respectively.
- Estimated quartiles: the paper does not print P25 or P75. Site P25 is the arithmetic midpoint of source P70 and P80; site P75 is the midpoint of source P20 and P30. These estimates are calculated from source values rounded to whole seconds.
- Protocol: participants completed one preliminary chair rise, then one timed trial with arms folded. Timing stopped on the fifth full stand. Chair height was not reported.
- Trend coordinates: closed 5-year groups use display midpoints from 52.5 through 87.5. The open 90+ group is plotted at 95 using the site's shared low-plus-five convention. Plot positions are not mean participant ages.
| Age group | Women | Men |
|---|---|---|
| 50-54 | 3,501 | 2,467 |
| 55-59 | 4,749 | 3,643 |
| 60-64 | 4,732 | 4,116 |
| 65-69 | 4,300 | 3,938 |
| 70-74 | 3,220 | 3,015 |
| 75-79 | 2,224 | 2,049 |
| 80-84 | 1,252 | 1,185 |
| 85-89 | 478 | 398 |
| 90+ | 106 | 97 |
The analytic sample covered a broad range of self-reported health and mobility rather than only healthy or high-functioning participants. More than 99.5% lived at home. People unable to complete the preliminary rise did not enter the timed-test distribution. The 90+ groups contain 106 women and 97 men, making their tail estimates less stable.
These are descriptive reference percentiles, not diagnostic thresholds for sarcopenia, falls, frailty, or another condition. Results from a different chair height, arm position, trial count, or stopping point should not be compared directly with this table.
